The
Oasis :
There are five oasis in Egypt which are located in the libyc desert.
Crossing this desert will be unforgettable with its inhospitable climate
where rain is very rare.
The oasis are Siwa, Farafra, Baharia, Dakhla
and
Kharaga.
Mirages and realities are there. Dunes, lakes, necropolis, white deserts
and sand baths ...
The Siwa Oasis
The oasis is located in the heart of a depression which sinks in more
eighteen meters below the
sea level. Some million years ago the lybic desert was completely covered
by waters of the
Mediterranean Sea. Today there are again salted lakes which are magic in
the landscape.
There are three hundred clear water sources scattered under shaded roads
by palm trees and
olive trees. They are the beauty and the wealth of the oasis. The
inhabitants are about ten
thousand
in 9 different tribes.
To
visit :
The Aghourmi's temple, the strengthened town of Shall, the graves of the
noble persons from the
26th dynasty in Gebel El-Maouta and the Cleopatre's bath.
The Baharia
Oasis
Located 360 km
far from Cairo,
it is the nearest to Cairo, and the less modern in spite
of the presence of an important iron mine. Its palm plantations cover a depression of
about one hundred kilometers long, with an uneven relief of balsat with many hot springs.
The oasis counts
more than
26 000 inhabitants.
It has reappers on the archaeological card with the quite recent discovery
of a very large
pharaonic necropolis which contains thousands mummies covered with golden leaves
(The Valley of the golden mummies).
The
Farafra oasis :
Farafra
is a tradional oasis.
Palm trees appear from a sea of dunes, lined lanes of blind walls.
The
Dakhla oasis :
In
a very rocky universe, the oasis extends
over more than about sixty kilometers.
To
visit :
Deir El-Hagar, Mouzaouaka's graves, strengthened town of El Kasr and the
village of Ballat.
The
Kharga oasis :
The most important oasis : 185 Kms long. It is a very rich archeological
site.
To
visit :
The Hibis temple, the Christian Necropolis of Bagaouat, the Nadoura
temple, the El-Deir's roman fortress,
the Quasr El-Ghoueita's temple and the archeological site of Douch.
The SINAÏ :
The Sinaï is the ground bridge between Africa and Asia. The hig mountains
of the Southern Peninsula :
2 641 meters high for the Ste Katharine Mount and 2 280 meters high for
the Moses mountain.
The Sinaï is one of the most beautiful landscapes of Egypt. The alpine
topography allows an exceptional
variety of the climate and the animal & vegetable life.
The Sinaï is very well-known for its ground hikes.
Safaris
It is possible to take part to several kinds of safaris (jeep cars, dromadaries
tours...)
The Bedouin
people
You will meet on the spot the local population, the bedouin people. These
inhabitants are still majority in the
Sinaï and in the western desert, but much less in the oriental desert.
They are several tribes who follow their
usual laws. Tribal confederacies in the North, in the South and in the
West manage their interests.
As nubien people, they always keep their traditions. The oldest members of
big families are usually the the
leaders of tribes.
